Term 2

Wow, we can’t believe we are starting Term 2 already!  The children have done an exceptional job of settling into their new school and routines. We are very proud of them all.  As we begin this term, please can we remind you to label everything that comes into school.  This does include BOTH shoes as the children will frequently be changing into their wellies.  As the colder weather draws in, please layer your child’s clothing accordingly. Due to the nature of EYFS, the doors are opening and closing all day. Base layers, tights and vests enable the children to remain warm throughout the setting.

Our learning in Term 2 will focus on “Celebrations”  and “Toys”.  The children will be learning about many celebrations, including Diwali and Christmas. Through our topic of Toys, we will be exploring the forces that make toys move and the materials they are made from, as well as discussing how toys have changed over time.  We will also be talking about toys that are special to us.  We will be reading many wonderful books this term to support our learning.

The children have made a fantastic start to their phonics learning! We encourage you to continue to use the phonics sound chart at home to support this. As part of our early morning activities, we will continue to develop the children’s fine motor skills. This includes using scissors, folding, sticking, threading, and sorting. We also ensure that all the children have multiple opportunities to mark-make and write throughout the entire setting, as well as guided learning of letter formation and name writing.

As part of our learning about autumn and seasonal change, we will be looking at the pumpkin art from the wonderful artist Yayoi Kusama. When learning about Diwali, we will be using clay to make our own Diwali tealight holders. We will be working creatively towards the end of term producing Christmas and winter crafts and using music and dance to express ourselves.

Children will continue to have a free flow system during their ‘Curiosity Time’. We shall continue to be led by the children’s interests, in addition to them having a variety of opportunities for exploring, experimenting and creating, based on what we have discussed and learned during our direct teaching sessions. During these sessions, the children will be crafting, role-playing, mark making, building on oracy and communication and developing new skills.

In maths this term, we will be gaining a deeper understanding of the composition of numbers to 5.  We will be learning how to find one more and one less than a number of objects and comparing amounts. We will also be exploring and comparing 2D shapes.

The children have been learning a new sound each day during our Phonics sessions. We are encouraging the children to orally blend as part of these sessions, to prepare them for reading.  We are introducing CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that they can sound out and blend themselves. We have assessed all the children now in preparation for smaller phonics group work starting this term. Please continue to read to your child at home and allow them opportunities to practise their phonic sounds.

P.E. for both classes will be on Tuesday.

Reminders:-

*Please ensure children bring in a snack from home each day.

If sending grapes, please ensure they are cut lengthways.

*Please could EVERYTHING that comes into school be clearly labelled-a name written in a permanent marker or biro is fine!

*Please bring in named wellies, a puddle suit and spare clothes if you haven’t done so already.
