Term 1

Welcome to EYFS and to the start of your journey at Palace Wood! We are looking forward to getting to know each other this term. Thank you for all your support with preparing your children for school and helping them settle into their new classes.

There is so much to learn in EYFS! When children start school, they will be learning how to follow the routines and expectations of the class and how to manage the different times of the day. All of this whilst exploring their new environment and making new friends!

If you have any questions or need anything clarified, please do not hesitate to come and chat to us.

In EYFS, the children learn through teacher directed sessions as well as child-initiated learning – ‘Curiosity Time’.  Our theme for Term 1 is 'All About Me'. We will begin our topic by thinking about ourselves and belonging.  We will be exploring our feelings through the wonderful book, ‘The Colour Monster’ and talking about what makes us feel the different emotions.

We will be learning about how we are all unique, including our families and likes and dislikes.  For this aspect of ourselves, we will be reading ‘What Makes Me, a Me?’ and ‘We’re All Wonders.’

Throughout EYFS, children will continue to develop their fine and gross motor skills. They will have lots of opportunities for mark making and moving towards writing letters. We will have an initial focus on recognising and writing our names.  We will also begin our phonics learning, following the Read, Write, Inc scheme.

In maths this term, we will be learning how to use our practical resources, as well as practising our number and counting skills and comparing amounts.

As part of our ‘All About Me’ theme, we will be thinking about our feelings, our families and people who help us.  Later in the term we will be exploring our senses and how we explore the world around us.

Children will be following their interests and developing all areas of the curriculum during their child initiated 'Curiosity Time'. During this time, they can practise the skills learnt during teacher directed sessions, as well as seeing where their own play takes them. We have a ‘free flow’ system for Curiosity Time so children can move between the two classrooms as well as our outdoor classroom.

This term, your children will bring home a 'sharing book' from our class collection for you to read and enjoy together. They will also bring home a wordless book which helps your child to understand stories through pictures and develop their talking skills. These will be collected in every Thursday ready for new books to be sent home on Fridays.

P.E. for both classes will be on Thursday.

Please ensure children come to school in the correct P.E. kit on this day and that any earrings have been removed. Please could children wear trainers that they can put on and take off by themselves, if possible, as they may need to change into wellies throughout the day.

Reminders:-

*Please bring a fruit/vegetable snack every day. Afternoon snack will be provided by school.

*Please ensure EVERYTHING that comes into school is clearly labelled -a name written in a permanent marker or biro is fine!

*Please bring in wellies, waterproof trousers and spare clothes for your child for us to keep in school. Please ensure spare clothes are in a named bag as these will go on their pegs.

Please see the Learning Overview below for more information about the Term 1 curriculum.
